Easy to Make Personalized Embossed Leather

It’s safe to say most people probably don’t get into leather working that much. While you usually don’t need to, making a customized embossing leather luggage tag is super easy and educational.

Personally, I’ve never really liked the luggage tags on most suitcases. The kind with a slide out card always make me worry that someone could swap in their own card and make off with my luggage while I’m not looking. It might be a little paranoid, but I prefer to have something unique on my bags.

Emboss leather tags are perfect for this. They can’t be easily altered, and they stand out from the rest of the bags on the carousel. They’re also crazy easy to make. DIY craft store Fairgoods has a guide on how to emboss your own leather tags (or anything else made of leather). The whole process breaks down into a few simple steps:

  1. Create a mockup of your tag design so you have a reference point to work from.
  2. Dip your piece of leather in water to dampen it. You can buy pre-cut leather tags for stupid cheap.
  3. Using a hammer and an alphabet stamp set, lightly tap each letter into the tag where you want it.

You can read more about the instructions below. However, once you learn the process, you can suddenly see all the other ways you can customize the leather objects in your life. The alphabet stamp set is easily the most expensive part of this guide, but if you’re interested in customizing your own leather stuff, you can use them over and over again. It’s also a nice introduction into how leather is molded into the objects you use every day.
